The Brothers McLeod - The Inverted Peak

Before going to MAF, i was already super excited to see this short film by the Brothers McLeod. Afer having previously met them at Aesthetica, I was now even more interested to see what they had been up to. This film was by far, one of the strangest animations I have ever seen, but this was the reason I found it so gripping and inspiring.

In some ways, I felt this animation lacked context, but this is what made it so good in my opinion. There were too aspects to this animation that influenced me a lot. The first being, the wobbly animation. I love the fact that the Brothers McLeod produce animation that is in some ways untidy, because this makes it more unique to them. Also, after speaking to them in person it made me realise that it suits them as practitioners, because they very much just want to enjoy what they do and do it in a way that suits them. The second thing that was so memorable about this film, was it's use of sound. They collaborated with Tom Angell who is a sound editor and musician, and he did a fantastic job with the audio for this film. The intensity of the sound was enough the make the audience feel uncomfortable but also gripped at the same time.

I think this animation turned out to be so successful because it was generated from the ideas that Greg and Miles McLeod had in their minds, and they took these further and began experimenting with them visually. After watching a behind the scenes clip they posted on Vimeo, I realised that they were actually very chilled out about this animation, and just wanted to see where it would go.

This has influenced me to actually not worry so much as a practitioner, because I know from some of my own previous experiences that some of the best things can be produced when it isn't even intended.
