Studio AKA

During Manchester Animation Festival, I attended a talk by Studio AKA. Up until this point I wasn't overly familiar with this studio, however I knew about some of the advertisements they had done for television. At the early stages of this talk, I for the impression that this was a very busy and very successful studio. Similarly to Sun & Moon, I soon noticed the huge range of work that was presented in front of me.

Every piece of animation was different to the last, and this again is something that I think added to their success. There was a range in style and technique, but everything was executed brilliantly!

One of the most prominent and memorable aspects of their work was the use of colour. I found that even their website homepage to be a visual feast. This struck me as a studio which consisted of different animators and artist with different specialisms, and these specialisms had all been utilized in the best way possible. Everything from backgrounds, to characters and the way they moved all worked fantastically in their context. Even in the case of their animated advertisements for TSB, I found the lack of backgrounds to be even better than if they were there. This brought more attention onto the characters and therefore made the advertisement on the whole, more memorable.

After carrying out further research on this studio, I found myself with the itch to draw and draw, because there was so much inspirational work on one page! In my opinion, I think Studio AKA have been so successful, because they are clearly very adaptable and willing to alter and change their styles to fit with what the client wants, which is something that made me more aware of the importance of not getting too attached to one particular way of working, especially if I wanted to work in a studio.
