Ethel & Ernest

Whilst at MAF, I got the chance to see the making of Ethel & Ernest, which was one of the most inspirational talks I went to. I must admit, before hand I wasn't too sure how I would find this talk, because to begin with I wasn't sure how much I like the aesthetic of the film. However, I very quickly changed my mind and fell in love with this film & everything about it. The talk itself went through the pipeline of creating this animation, but there were definitely certain aspects of it that stuck with me the most.

When it came onto the topic of character design & how they went about ageing the characters, this was really interesting to me, because I have never really thought about how I would ever go about doing this if I had to. As well as this, seeing their turn around sheets was also incredibly helpful, because it actually made me see where I had been going wrong with my won turnarounds - the 34 poses that I had been creating were slightly off, so seeing the examples that were shown here really helped!

i think the reason this animation was so successful was for 2 reasons. The first being, the aesthetic and design work behind it was brilliant and moulded really well with the context of the story, Secondly, the fact that it was based off a true story makes it easier to connect with. I know from my own experience that after watching this I was in tears, partially because it all really did happen.
