Manimation - Meet the experts

While in Manchester, I signed up for Meet the experts, which was an opportunity to speak to practitioners from different studios and gain as much insight as possible into what they look for in a candidate for a job. This was one of the most helpful and informative events I attended whilst in Manchester and I left with a clear view on what to include in my showreel and the areas that I needed to improve on.

The studios that I was able to talk to were, Real Time, Liddell Studios, Factory, Brown Bag and Cosgrove Hall Fitzpatrick. Even though not all of these studios necessarily fit in with what I want to focus on as a practitioner, it was still very interesting to get the chance to hear different feedback from different practitioners. After this event, two of the most influential discussions I had was with Cosgrove Hall and Liddell Studios.

After speaking to Cosgrove Hall, it became apparent how much they value good quality turnarounds, which is something I knew I wanted to improve on anyway, so this gave me that extra push to improve the stuff I was producing. Also, after speaking to Tracy Liddell, she stressed the importance of reaching out and speaking to people, which again is something I knew I needed to do more of at this time. Tracy also mentioned that she would be happy to review my work if I sent it her way, and that she would be happy to do this every few months or so.

Feedback from Tracy

The following week I sent Tracy an email thinking her for her time, as well as a link to my showreel, on the off chance she was able to offer any feedback. Fortunately, she was glad to help and gave me a lot of helpful feedback. When I came to updating my reel, I knew exactly what I needed to improve on. One of the main areas of feedback given was that my reel could have benefited from more environmental work, not just character based work. Therefore when I came to update my reel, I made sure to include some of this.
