Craig Knowles

During this past year, I have become increasingly familiar with the work of Craig Knowles, who is a Character Designer, Animator and Illustrator. One of the reasons I became so interested in him as a practitioner is because he has the job description that I would one day love to have!

One of the first things that grabbed my attention when looking through his work, was the style. I found it to be very unique to him & believe he has done a really good job of making his work identifiable as his own. Even though I have been continuously saying that I think a lot of success can come from not having a specific style, I still think having one very strong singular style can also be very beneficial. However, whilst looking through his work I could still see examples of work that were quite different to some others, which still suggested that Craig Knowles is another examples of a practitioner who is very adaptable when it comes to creating designs.

I loved the edginess to his work, and thought the use of colour was brilliant. He is definitely somebody who knows how to use colour effectively. This has made me think more about the use of colour, and impact it can have.

Something I noticed after following him on social media, was that he often made quick post-it doodles. I instantly wanted to give this a go, because it is something that I had never thought about before. I actually found after doing a few of my won that it was in some ways more enjoyable and relaxing, because it encouraged me to make the most of a smaller space.

I have continuously found myself gaining inspiration for Knowlio, and quite often this inspiration comes from some of his very quick effortless drawings, This is because it has encouraged me not to forget to draw for enjoyment and to not get too bogged down with work to the point where I forget to have fun with it.

I found myself even being inspired by some of his background designs, because I noticed how sometimes keeping things quite simple can be more effective and better to work with!
