Blue Zoo Seminar - Hoodoo

After attending this seminar based on Blue Zoo's VR animation, I found myself having gained a lot of advice and insight not just for my COP project, but also as somebody who enjoys designing characters for both 2D & 3D animation. During this seminar, it was mentioned by some of the artists behind it that the first initial inspiration came from 2D elements such as travel posters. Despite the finished result being a 3D interactive animation, all initial designs began as 2D.

Since at this point I was gathering research for my dissertation, and was designing the same characters in both 2D & 3D, I used this is a time to ask for their opinion on this & how they go about taking a 2D character into the 3D realm. I was interested how they keep the 3D version of a character consistent with it's original 2D design, however to my surprise I did not get the answer that I was expecting. I was told not to worry too much about keeping the character exact to it's 2D design, because that would be very difficult to do, and to be open to the character changing slightly once it has been built in 3D.

This was one of the most influential and helpful pieces of feedback I acquired on this topic, because it encouraged me not to overly worry if my 3D characters didn't look 100% the same as the 2D versions. This encouraged me to use my COP as an experiment and learn from it.

I found Blue Zoo's VR animation to be really inspiring in terms of character & environmental design.  3D is not my specialism, but I still loved the design work behind it, and really found it to be inspiring.
